Thomas Chippendale 1718-1779

Thomas Chippendale was arguably the most important English furniture designer in the history of English cabinet making, not only producing new and interesting designs but influencing aesthetic taste over the length and breadth of Britain and, indeed, the world. With the publication of his Director in 1754 Thomas Chippendale opened his furniture designs to a far greater audience attracting commissions from many great stately homes and patrons. His mix of functional, fashionable and bold taste sparked a buying revolution in the aristocracy and the new landed gentry promoting his style worldwide. The use of the finest craftsmen and woods further promoted his works.
