The Surgery Workshop
Our location on the Whippendell Road, in the heart of Watford's industrial district, reflects the heritage that stands behind the firm's history.
With small beginnings in 1976, originally based in Putney - the firm is living testimony to the growth of local industry, and has grown from strength-to-strength to presently serve the London, Herts and Middlesex areas.
Having knowledge of woodwork, Jake Radford was employed by Harrods of Knightsbridge, London, in 1985. There he was fully trained during a three-year apprenticeship as a French Polisher and Furniture Restorer, while studying for City & Guilds Modern & Traditional Wood Finishing - Parts I, II and III (Grade : Distinction).
This led to employment with Harrods for a further 18 months where his experience in restorations, woodwork and cabinet-making was still-further enhanced.
In 1989, the decision was made to go self-employed. Having set up his own workshop, contract work was done for antique dealers and private customers in London.
In 1991, Jake joined forces with another experienced antique restorer - Malcolm Gibson. They extended and refurbished the workshop in order to maintain and improve the high quality of work. This also enabled the business to undertkae wood-turning, desk-top leathering, inlay work, caning and arrange for upholstery.
Recruiting apprentices allowed the facility of working in domestic and commercial settings, where traditional and modern finishes are required on panelling, staircases, doors and the like.
Their customer-base soon developed to include interior designers, property developers and many acclaimed private antique enthusiasts.
Since the passing away of Malcolm Gibson, Jake has expanded the workshop once more - and moved finally into The Surgery Workshop - where they now operate a collection and delivery service.
